The Amalfi Coast is a must visit destination on the west coast of Italy. The coast itself is made up of a few different towns and islands, the main ones being Amalfi, Positano and Capri. Whilst each has something different to offer for time and expense we chose to visit Amalfi and Positano. Being an expensive place for accommodation we stayed in nearby Salerno, a ferry away from the main sights.
The region is beautiful, so different from anywhere else in the world. The towns are constructed on steep hills, the houses are nourished by a network of narrow paths and streets. Once you get past the crowds and expense, the charm of the place takes hold of you.
Escape the Crowds
Hiking out of Amalfi is easy and something we would suggest as the most amazing hike we did in Italy. Starting from the Amalfi port, walk through the town and head upwards. Follow signs to the waterfall and you will be rewarded with the best view of Amalfi Town. Hike amongst groves of manicured lemon trees, take a sweet lemon granita at the half way point for €2. Keep on the path to the very top, as far as you can go. Here there is a serene waterfall, no people, unspoiled at your leisure. We felt like we were more in Jurassic Park than in Italy! Total hike time around 1.5 hours.
